A new update. It was definitely harder this week. And I’m kind of stuck with the third act of the script I’m working on. But got to keep pushing through. Did I mention I’m also working full time? What has been helpful is just the act of typing, putting down words, even if they don’t completely make sense. I heard this said as advice and I am finding that I agree.
1- Script read: Frat Boy Genius
This was the #1 2018 Blacklist script. My thoughts: really well written. I loved the voice on the page, the creative use of Snapchat transitions, a voiceover with her own personality and arc – a very easy read (unlike 2017’s #1). And I got some inspiration on some technical elements of screenwriting, such as the use of bolds, montages, and scene movement. But at the end of the day, it didn’t really move me and kind of felt too much like a The Social Network-lite.
2 – Movies watched: The Miseducation of Cameron Post & Lean on Pete
I was impressed how in The Miseducation of Cameron Post slight details really made the characters and story feel alive to me. And I liked how the camp was not wholly “evil” but more complicated. Chloë Grace Moretz was really good and Forrest Goodluck was hilarious for me. Felt like a Sundance movie. Not sure about the ending (spoiler* what really kept them from leaving earlier?)
Lean on Pete – Wow, I thought it was going to be a young adult movie, something kind of heart-warming. It is not. Did not expect it to be such a dark movie. Cinematography and blocking were great, but kind of got repetitive to me after awhile.
7 – Pages written: 12
Still rewriting pages (i.e., cheating). But moving forward and it feels good.
14 – Story Prep, Learn the Craft/Business: I expanded this part to include more than just prep. Still reading King Leopold’s Ghost. Also, took some time to play with Scapple to work out some ideas. And of course, listened to several podcasts (note to self: I’ll have to do a post about my favorite filmmaking podcasts sometime)
